Senators Demand Ukraine’s Involvement in Future Talks

United States: U.S. Democratic and Republican senators plan to submit resolution support for Ukraine on Monday out of concern that President Donald Trump may strike a deal with Russia which would exclude Kyiv from the agenda following Russia’s three-year-long full-scale assault on Ukraine, as reported by Reuters.

Senators Push for Ukraine’s Inclusion in Peace Talks

An upcoming Senate resolution displayed to Reuters presents dual aims to demonstrate Ukraine’s sympathy while mourning its many victims and establish Kyiv’s position at any future peace negotiations.

The introduction occurs during a time when the United States-European relations experience turbulence resulting from Trump’s changing position regarding the conflict. The Republican president recently criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy while he began private discussions with Russia to end the war yet he did this without consulting either Ukraine or European allies.

Bipartisan Effort Led by Senators Shaheen and Tillis

Senator Jeanne Shaheen of the Foreign Relations Committee and Senator Thom Tillis jointly initiated this resolution. The pair of legislators made their Ukrainian trip last week as part of their diplomatic mission alongside Democratic Senator Michael Bennet.

Twelve lawmakers have supported this resolution, including Senate Republicans like former leader Mitch McConnell, Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker, and Judiciary Committee leader Chuck Grassley together with Democratic leadership member Dick Durbin and Democratic foreign policy official Michael Bennet, as reported by Reuters.

Emphasis on Ukrainian Sovereignty and Euro-Atlantic Integration

“The Senate emphasizes that Ukraine must be a participant in discussions with the Russian Federation about Ukraine’s future,” the resolution says.

Although the resolution avoids endorsing Ukrainian NATO entry it establishes American backing for Ukrainian territorial sovereignty and “support Ukraine’s efforts to integrate into Euro-Atlantic structures.”

In an emailed statement, Shaheen said: “As Vladimir Putin’s illegal and brutal full-scale invasion enters its fourth year, I’m proud to introduce this bipartisan resolution that clearly states our unwavering support for and solidarity with the Ukrainian people and condemns Russia’s aggression.”
